Heil, Minnetonka Tribunal!
This cartoon is the best commentary on the Strib dumping Lileks I’ve seen so far.
I started reading Lileks in 1996, when I stumbled on his Gallery of Regrettable Food. Compare that to the Strib: we had a subscription for about 6 months, until the incessant ideological haranguing drove us to cancel it. I mean, the Strib has got some great things going for it. The Taste section (once a week) is excellent and almost worth the price of admission right there. And they have F-Minus, which is the funniest cartoon currently in syndication.
But even when we agreed with the Strib on some issue or article, it was tough to choke down the smarmy self-righteousness. Self-righteousness leaves a nasty taste in the mouth whether you agree with whomever is dishing it out or not. Also, it was hard to read the entire paper every single day, which we felt we had to do to be getting our money’s worth. So we switched over to a weekend subscription to the Pioneer Press, which we’ve been pleased as punch with ever since. The gardening column comes out on Saturday, which totally rules. And while I don’t get F-Minus, I get Lio, which is almost as good.
