Stevie Wonder and the Moro Reflex
Have you ever heard of the Moro reflex? [NIH | Wikipedia] According to Wikipedia, the Moro reflex is “a response to unexpected loud noise or when the infant feels like it is falling. It is believed to be the only unlearned fear in human newborns.”
Well, starting around two weeks ago, Caroline has begun to see things farther away. At least, this is my theory, because she’s started Moro reflexin’ all over the place, flailing her arms around at things which she formerly wouldn’t. For instance, when we carry her down the stairs, I think she can see all the way down the stairs now and it kind of freaks her out. Before it was the Happy Bouncy Path, and now it’s a never ending Precipice of Doom.
And watching her arms fly out like that is the funniest damn thing ever. I mean, she doesn’t do the full Moro and get all the way into crying because she’s not really falling, right? She figures it out and catches herself. She gets this look on her face like “AAAAHHHH I’M FALLING wait no I’m not.” It’s really hilarious, although I think she’s starting to figure out stairs.
The other thing she started doing just the other day is whipping her head back and forth like Stevie Wonder. She doesn’t have the whole neck control thing down yet. I also find this hilarious. I now kind of wish we did have a video camera just so we could record her doing this, and then I could edit the video and set it to “Higher Ground”.

And here I thought I was the only one who found that motion completely hilarious. Luckily, after that disappears, other behaviors come around to keep the hilarity going…
