Yanni: The Blog Post
Argh! Why am I posting about Yanni!?
Well, I heard that he went to the University of Minnesota. So I went to Wikipedia to check it out, and lo, he did. Turns out he used to be in a rock and roll band while he went there, so now I’m looking for Yanni rock mp3s.
Anyway, it’s impossible to listen to as many comedy routines as I have and not know who Yanni is. But… what does his music sound like? Oh, it’s bad, of course. And new age-y, of course. But suddenly I realized that while I knew all of the cliches, and could make half a dozen jokes about Yanni and his music, I never actually heard any of it before.
So I went to (where else?) yanni.com, where they have a link to, appropriately enough, Yanni Radio. (I also learned from Yanni’s website that he has a fan club, and a newsletter called Yanni News. Hmm… Google News, Yanni News. Google Image Search, Yanni Image Search… okay wait that’s way too creepy.)
Where was I? Oh yes, Yanni Radio. They don’t play full length songs on Yanni Radio, they play 30 second snippets. And the first snippet was pretty good. “Adagio in C” I think it was called. Towards the end of the snippet it sounded like a full orchestral version of a song from Final Fantasy or something.
Then there was a couple more snippets. Each one was technically good on its own, but I got sick of listening to it all at once. The last snippet started out really good, it had some chick singing in some weird language and then these fast paced drums and just as I thought “man, this song needs a rockin’ guitar solo, right about now”, a wimpy hippie flute started wailing out of my speakers.
Stupid hippies. I closed my web browser.
