CanadaWatch: How much is your neighbor’s dog worth?

Canadians get a quick lesson in Economics:

The hamlet of Rae-Edzo, located about 100 kilometres north of Yellowknife, has started paying anyone 16 or older a fee of $50 for each stray dog turned in.

The program was brought in after public health officials said dogs were running loose and biting people, especially elderly people.

Local officials said their initial offer of $30 per dog didn’t generate enough action, so they increased the reward.

About 100 dogs have been destroyed since the bounty was raised.

Want to guess what happened next? People started untying their neighbors’ dogs and turning them in, of course. Frankly, I was surprised that wasn’t happening at 30 bucks per dog, but then I realized that it was 30 bucks in Canadian dollars. That works out to about 24 dollars. (50 dollars canadian is 40 real dollars.)

Would you untie your neighbor’s dog and turn it in for either 24 or 40 dollars? How about when you were in High School, would you do it then?
