New major offered
Harvard announced on Wednesday that it will soon be offering a new major in Home Economics:
In an effort to “level the academic playing field,” Harvard University President Lawrence Summers announced today that the university would introduce a home economics major designed specifically for its female students.
“Starting in the fall, Harvard will offer home economics for women who find economics too tricky,” said Mr. Summers, who called the move “long overdue.”
[Aside: Peggy and I were both bummed out when we found out that the University of Minnesota has a Home Economics building but no longer offers any classes in the subject. We’d both be interested! Bring back Home Ec.!]

I am happy about this news. Home Economics should really be back. I am trying to finish my Masters which I started in the Philippines but I am having difficulty finding a University close to where I am. Home Economics teachers are growing old and when they retire, there may not be enough teachers trained to replace them.
