State Fair pics

Okay, I finished editing and uploading my pics from the state fair this year. See also my writeup of the fair here and here. Last year’s State Fair writeups: going to the fair a few days early, first annual weblog post from the fair, meeting Lileks for the first time, pictures with commentary.

  • Obligitory crowd pic
  • Sheep getting primped up for competition
  • Hugh Hewitt cozily ensconced in the AM 1280 portable radio studio.
  • Hugh and me
  • Rocket Man from Powerline Blog contemplates a Pronto-Pup.
  • First hour lineup of the Northern Alliance radio show. From left to right: Mitch Berg, from shotinthedark.info, Captain Ed from Captain’s Quarters, and Rocket Man and The Big Trunk from Powerline.
  • Second hour lineup: Mitch Berg, St. Paul and The Elder from Fraters Libertas, and Michael J. Nelson from MST3k fame.
  • Mike Nelson expresses confusion over my camera, which is split in half and rotates in weird and wonderful ways. Once I explained that it was, in fact, a camera, he seemed to be more okay with it.
  • What would the state fair be without politically motivated seed art? One of the first place winners (there are many categories of seed art) was “A Day In The Life Of The Elephant King”, from which I took this detail shot. Another winner was the Right Wing Pie Fling, which I didn’t understand until I read the exegesis over at Powerline. And of course, the obligatory Che piece. At least there were some entries that didn’t have something to do with politics. (My theory is that if you’re obesessive-compulsive-nutso enough to make pictures by gluing little seeds to a board, you’ll probably be obsessive-compulsive-nutso about other things too.)
  • The scarecrow I talked about yesterday. The face is fired clay, actually.
  • One Vote, One Stroke. This was a big canvas where you got a paintbrush and were allowed to put one brushstroke on it, red for Bush and blue for Kerry. This exhibit was in the technology building, of all places.
  • Finally, while walking around we ran into a giant skating park. I got three good pics: one, two, three. I have no idea what that kid is doing in the third picture, but I know he had a perfect landing. The kid is 10 years old, by the way. The kid in the first picture is 9. All I have to say is that I’m amazed the P.C. Police haven’t gotten around to banning these guys yet. Look, no elbow or knee pads!

    Nearly Perfect
It was a truly wonderful weekend. Friday night, my son had a bunch of his friends sleep over. Everyone had a good time. More importantly, they went to bed at a reasonable hour, which is kind of a new thing…
