Colonial wimps

Since we shut off our cable and haven’t been able to get any TV reception–we just haven’t watched TV. Last night I got to watch some at Jenn’s house-teehee! We watched American Idol and Colonial House. On Idol, I finally got to see what the contestants look like after hearing about them on the radio all the time. I guess Fantasia will win. Good for her, I guess. I’m not really into it on account of not having TV. Now, Colonial House was very interesting! It’s a reality show on PBS where the people live like settlers from England did in the 1700’s, everything from food to clothing to common laws. One funny thing was the townspeople were all supposed to go to services on Sunday and one couple didn’t. They didn’t believe in God and the wife decided that it was offensive to her to have to listen to people pray and whatnot, so they went to the river for a nekkid swim instead. Well, she had to get tied to a little stake in the ground and sit for a couple hours after the governor handed down the punishment. The next week they didn’t go again and another couple ditched the services too. Aside from skipping church, other illegal things were swearing, which one guy did all the time, and women had to wear corsets and keep their heads covered. Since so many people were skipping church and getting in trouble the governor decided to waive the church law, on account of it cutting into people being able to work. So then the pastor’s wife told the governor that she wasn’t going to keep her head covered because people didn’t have to go to church so why should she have to keep her head covered. Damn kids. It was sad to see these people all signing up for this stuff but then not wanting to follow the rules and I felt sorry for the governor.

The show was pretty interesting. Ever since I was little, I always wondered what it was like to live back in that time…and I thought it would be so neat to travel back and live life the way they did. It would probably make me a bit more appreciative of the “little things” in life.
Something I liked about the show was that the Governor was getting so down and frustrated about everybody disobeying different laws… (No, that’s not the part I liked)… Well he was all depressed and saying that today was his 25th wedding anniversary, and he can’t be with his family. (25 years, That’s a big deal! He SHOULD be with his family!..in particular his wife)
So then the show talked about how they got his wife and 2 kids to “come back to the settlement”! (I guess they had been there before in another episode, I don’t know.) So his family showed up and surprised him. It was such a touching moment.

Some things with the show are obviously not very realistic of that time of day. I know that they used to hang people and burn them at the stake, etc. But they can’t show those sort of things with a reality show. I’m not saying I want to see someone die, but you just can’t get the full effect of living back then. Oh well… I guess we’ll never really know exactly what it was like.

See, I’m just the opposite. I wonder what people back then would think of life today.

They would probably think we’re all going to HELL!
