Signal / Noise

I was reading an MSDN article today about WinFS, and I came to a realization about the signal/noise ratio on blog comments. When I was reading, I kept coming upon assertions or statements of fact that I felt could be more specific or otherwise improved upon. “Over 400,000 terabytes of e-mail were sent and stored in 2002.” “Yeah, but how much of that was spam?!” etc.

If I was reading a blog post, I would be tempted to actually post said comment. But MSDN has no comments, so my brain dropped my objections to the trivialities much, much faster. I’m willing to bet that most of the nitpicking comments on blogs are there just because people can vent their personal pet peeves instead of letting them go.
