Wallyworld

A little sleepy today. Devin keeps leaving for work at 6:15 instead of 7:15 and I wake up at that time too. Except this morning I was so tired I just woke up and made coffee and then fell asleep on the couch. It was so warm and comfy on the couch that I overslept a little and have had a hard time waking up–I’ve just been all groggy. So couple that with our new no caffeine at lunch program and I think I’m in for a headache.

I saw an ad for ‘White Oleander’ on HBO and in the ad one of the characters asks, “What’s the BEST day of your life?” I immediately tried to think of the best day and I couldn’t. Why just one? A lot of people say the day they were married or the birth of their kids but those are kinda cheater days. I’ve had a lot of really good days. On vacation or just when everything went well or I fell asleep content–those were all pretty good. Also, a lot of my really great days have been with Devin and it would be hard to put any one memory above the others. Just one day-impossible. There are some days that I know I’m gonna wish I had back when I’m on my deathbed. Not because they were great but because I know I could have done better, I already wish I had the 3 hours back that I spent watching ‘The English Patient.’ I guess I shouldn’t be too bitter about all the hours I spend at work because they make other things possible, like food.

Huh. I think I figured out why food costs so much here. It’s not the cost of land or taxes. The grocery store workers are unionized and some get paid upwards of $17 an hour for cashiering. They are talking about striking and are currently renegotiating their contracts. The grocery stores are worried because Wal-Mart is moving in with supercenters and for some reason their workers won’t have to be union so the prices are going to be tons lower than the regular stores. So the grocery stores are using Wal-Mart as and excuse to give the employees less wages and medical. If the union strikes then the stores will hire scabs. I’m torn. I want people to get a living wage and I want to support them but if I need stuff at the store will it be wrong to buy things from scabs? And then when Wal-Mart moves in should I support the regular stores where a dozen eggs cost $2.29 or should I go to Wal-Mart and get more for my money? Geez, I don’t know.

The concept of a living wage is laughable.

Yeah, I just like the idea of a living wage, not the reality of a living wage. Just dosen’t work.
